Macau currently has over 40 casinos operating within its "borders", including the Venetian Macau and MGM Casino.
The question is - why are there so many casinos in Macau?
To answer this question, we first need to have a history lesson.
Macau was formerly a colony of Portugual before it was returned to China in 1999.
In the 1850s, gambling was legalized in Macau by the Portugese government. The industry blossomed in Macau, and currently accounts for roughly 50% of Macau's economy.
Macau, which is a special administrative region of China, continues to offer legal gambling to the world, even though gambling is not legal in China. This is allowed under China's "one country, two systems" mandate.
As a result, Macau receives millons of visitors annually from China, Hong Kong and all other parts of the world.
China is no fool - why would they ban gambling in Macau when it is such a profitable industry?

When foreign casinos entered Macau, the gambling landscape in the region changed.
In the past, only Chinese games were played in Macau, but now there are all of the traditional games that people have come to expect from a casino.

Las Vegas was mentioned as one of the gambling meccas of the world, but Macau actually has a larger gambling industry when measured by total revenues.
